Common issues that people come to
see me for have included, depression and anxiety, grief and loss,
relationships and trauma. I have prepared some information about each of these
issues for your interest. I have also provided some useful links to help in your search for
support and resources.
There are now hundreds of therapeutic
approaches being offered to the community and this can be extremely
confusing when trying to decide what approach and which therapist will
suit you. While the approach is important, research has shown
that the relationship between client and therapist is of greater
significance. For more information go to www.talkingcure.com
Many psychotherapists are influenced by
more than one theory and approach. My therapeutic approach is
primarily psychodynamic which means that I see many of the emotional
problems people experience to stem from past issues of childhood.
I also work with an understanding of the unconscious and how it
manifests itself in life, dreams and in the therapeutic
relationship.
My clinical work is influenced by a
person-centred approach which values the use of empathy, congruence and
unconditional positive regard in the therapeutic relationship.
Feminist theories and principles also informed the way I approach and
understand issues such as sexual assault and violence against
women. I keep myself informed with contemporary research into
trauma and effective and safe ways of working with those who have
experienced it.
My current study in psychoanalytic theory
keeps me reading, thinking and learning and contributes to my clinical
work.
I believe that people have power and
wisdom within themselves, often at an unconscious level and given the
opportunity and therapeutic space can be harnessed to improve life.
